  Surrogacy

A surrogate is a woman who carries a pregnancy for another couple. The availability of surrogacy as an option has provided many couples an opportunity to make their dream of parenthood a reality.

Who can opt for surrogacy?

Surrogacy is an option for women with untreatable uterine factors, but having normal functioning ovaries.
Women with a congenital absence of uterus (born without uterus) or uterine malformations with repeatedpregnancy loss or
those in whom prior hysterectomy was done for malignant conditions can opt for surrogacy.
Surrogacy is also advised in women suffering from medical illnesses like severe heart disease, severe renal disease, etc.,
  which are contraindications for pregnancy.

  Selection of a surrogate:
The woman should be of legal age. She should be healthy and should have given birth to a live child at term, preferably with no history of serious antepartum and postpartum complications.

A surrogate may be known or anonymous. A known surrogate may be a close relative or friend of the intended parents who volunteers to carry the pregnancy till term and deliver the child. An anonymous surrogate is identified with the help of legal agencies who recruit surrogates.

Details about the ART procedure, complications which may occur during pregnancy, legal issues, and emotional aspects are clearly explained to the intended couple and the surrogate.

What is the procedure involved in surrogacy?
The couple and the surrogate are evaluated thoroughly as in any ART procedure. The written consent is taken from the intended couple and the surrogate before the treatment is planned. The embryo is formed from the intended couple by a routine IVF procedure. Meanwhile, the surrogate is prescribed estrogen and progesterone for priming of the uterus lining (endometrium). The embryos formed are transferred into the uterus of the surrogate. Pregnancy testing is done for the surrogate 2 weeks after the embryo transfer, and if positive, she carries the pregnancy till term to deliver and give the child to the intended couple.
